Description

Big Dumb Eyes is the debut book by Nate Bargatze, the Grammy-nominated stand-up comedian known for his wholesome, self-deprecating Southern humour. The book is a memoir-style collection of funny personal stories from Bargatze’s life — growing up in Springfield, Tennessee, as the son of a clown (literally), his path to stand-up comedy, family life, and his unexpected rise to become one of the most popular comedians in America.

The title refers to Bargatze’s own description of himself and his observational, wide-eyed approach to the world. Fans of his Netflix specials The Greatest Average American and Hello World will find the book a natural companion — the same earnest, unhurried comedic voice on the page.

“I’m not a smart man. But I know what funny is.”

My Notes

First of all, I love this comic. I find his stories of his family life particularly entertaining in his standup. This book however was simply a retelling of most of those stories, but without the visual feel of the stage.

One thing I disliked, and may have made me feel different about his standup is that he constantly makes light of how dumb he is… to the point of glorifying it. I am not an elitist by any stretch, but feel it pitiable when someone seems to do self-effacing communication as if they are self conscious of their own intelligence. So… this kind of took me out of the ‘funny’ of the book.
